25.12.1989 - Ceauşescus & me

"On 25 December 1989 morning the ex-president couple of Romania, two Ceauşescus are executed by a firing squad."

I announced the news exactly with these words on 26.12.1989, the next day of the event to the class. I was in the first grade, primary school. My primary school teacher had asked for students to present daily news in the class voluntarily. In the morning, first thing was to talk about yesterdays events.

The teacher was very excited, silenced the class, asked me to repeat it. it was indeed a very historical event. One of the climax in the history of Europe, if not mankind, where Communist regimes started to fall apart.

I also announced Elena's last words such as "you can judge me now but history will judge you." I searched that sentence later but could not find. Indeed, it was not important because I did not know that Elena spoke a thousand words before the execution.

What else i didnt know or possibly dont remember now?
On 21st December, there was a mass gathering in the main square of Bucharest, Romania. The crowd grew the next day caused the couple to overnight in the palace like government structure. Any attempts to disassemble the unarmed crowd was unseccussful by military and police forces.
On 22nd December, the protests spread to the other cities. The crowd took control of the building. The couple has flet by a helicopter waiting on the roof.
On 23rd December, they were caught. The military ordered the pilot of the helicopter to land. Police caught them and gave them to military. There were trials the following day in a military facility in a small town. The records show that the couple consistently denied any accusation and repeatedly unrecognised the authority of the judges.
On 25th December, morning, they were shot with their hands tied. The couple did not wanted to be tied. Indeed, they kept denying, accusing, yelling during all this period. The firing squad was so excited that they start shooting as soon as the couple is placed in front of the wall, before camera starts to capture the shooting process. Their dead bodies were recorded and investigated on the ground to be approved dead. The blood was covering the ground despite of the cold morning. They were shot with their all thick fancy clothes. Since they were on trial in a military camp, they were not maintained at all. The bodies covered with a canvas.

The western media was announcing the number of the dead people during the protests as 60 thousand although all hospitals in the country has recorded less than 1000 causilities during the same period.

The execution records are released to the western resources as soon as possible. The same day at evening, they were shown in the Romanian television as well.

This may be one of the reasons why I was so interested with the event.

But still, it is very unusual for me who cannot keep anything in mind, to remember all those for more than 20 years in very details.

It is also very unusual for a 7 years old kid to be interested with the revolutions and execution of overthrown leaders and present them in the class.
